ADHD & Addiction

Many people with ADHD have tendencies to Addictions. One such addiction is Substances abuse such as

AlcoholMarijuana,

Heroin,Prescription tranquilizers,

Pain medication,Nicotine,

Caffeine,Sugar,

Cocaine Street amphetamines

This is an attempt to soothe their brains and bodies that are constantly on the go. We use these substances in the hope to improve our abilities, make us feel better, or to try and deal with our feelings. The term used for this is called self-medicating.

Does addition become a Rolla- coaster of difficulties?

Self-Medicating will work at first it provides the ADHD sufferer relief from the restlessness they experience in mind's and body.

Some sufferers, have used drugs such as

Nicotine, Caffeine,

Cocaine, Diet pills

Speed

Which are all stimulants which help them to concentrate clearly, and follow through with actions to tasks. Others choose alcohol and marijuana,to deal with their ADHD symptoms. People who have a history of substance abuse are not "bad" people. They are just desperately attempting to control their feelings, and difficulties associated with ADHD.The problem is, when a person self-medicates it brings with it related problem which make people's lives with ADHD much more difficult. What starts as a possible "solution", can quickly turn to other problems including

Addiction, Impulsive

criminal acts Violent outburst both verbal and physical,

Losing jobs, Collage placements.

Lost relationships with Family and friends Losing yourself worth

Too many people with untreated ADHD who Self-medicate with alcohol and other drugs go on a Rolla-coaster of up and downs never seeming to end. When you use the substances that we have talked about you journey on that Rolla-coaster just keeps continuing going up and down.

Who Will Become Addicted?

There is no single cause for addictions; it is a combination of factors some of these can be.

Genetic predisposition, Neurochemistry,

Family history, Trauma,

Life stress

Some may have genetic predisposition for alcoholism, but this does not mean that they will become an alcoholic. The same most is said about drug addictions. If you never start to take Marijuana Cocaine, Heroin, You will never become an addict. People with ADHD are more likely To try and self-medicate with substances than those who do not have ADHD. Some times ADHD & Addiction go head in head; this is especially so of the sufferer that is self-medicating.

ADHD & Alcohol Addiction

Many alcoholics described feelings of

Anxiousness Impassivity Distractibility

Many of these feelings were present before a person started drinking, they drink to elevate the feelings they are experiencing this is also celled self-medicating.When people find themselves in situations were they start to feel the emotions that make them, sad or anxious Alcohol is away of escaping from these emotions person can only start to deal with their alcohol addiction by dealing with the emotion that triggers the impulse to drink.ADHD sufferers quite often stray into alcohol addiction due to the fact that they have lived with untreated ADHD and are still struggling with

Negative outlook Confidence

Self-esteem Negative image of themselves

If a person is to overcome their alcohol addiction they first need to deal with the emotional triggers that set off the impulse to drink.Understanding the reasons behind your addiction can help you to overcoming it and move on with your life.

Restlessness in body and mind

Impulsiveness,

Low self-esteem,

Shame & embarrassment,

Low Attention levels

Organization problems,

Find Social interaction difficult.

It is very difficult to say no to drugs "Just Say No!" may sound simple but to some impossible to comprehend a life with out their addictions,

Addictions do not always come in the form of Alcohol and substances.

Many people can have addiction to Food and Shopping In fact any thing can become addictive, how many of you can identifier with these Only drinking on type of coffee, other coffees do not do it for you. Eating a specific type of food all over and over again day after day. Fine it hard to stop playing computer games or Gambling, to the extant that it is the first thing you think of when you wake up in the morning.

Any addiction can be overcome but first you most understand your addiction and what it gives you.

Many Adults and children can have addictions and most of these addictions come from the stimulus the addiction gives us. When we find something we like we can become addicted.

Addiction becomes a problem when it starts to impact on your daily life, to such an extreme that it interferes with your functioning or development. Many of the additions that are common in people with ADHD are due to a people self-medication in the attempt to eliveate the symptoms of ADHD. If we are to minimize or eliminate self-medicating, ADHD most be treated sooner.

When Prescribed medication is used to treat ADHD that is monitored and controlled in a medical environment it can stop the need to self-medicate.Thus eliminate substance & addiction abuse. It should also be said that ADHD children and adults need support from a range of disciplines not just medication.
