Help Children with ADHD & Hidden Impairments. Develop Communication Skills

The following tips will help children become confidant when communicating

1. Enlist the help of an older child that will engage your child in short conversations to help develop skills.

2. Use books, magazines and television to help your child with facial expressions and body language. Talk to them about what certain expressions mean and how we can learn about a person from their body language. Use role-play to demonstrate these.

3. Take the time to repeat back to your child what you think they meant. If needed, help them find ways to better explain themselves.

4. Ask your child to repeat back to you what they think you said. This will help you see how well your child listens during a conversation.

5. Have eye contact: have your child practice using eye contact when speaking to other people.

6. Learning about turn talking when in a conversation. Explain it is like ping-pong, a person talks, you listen, you talk, and person listens.

7. Discuss the many different types of people and help your child to develop an acceptance of al types of people. Use books and television shows to discuss how different people view the world. Explain that the different perceptions of people are not right or wrong, just different.

8. Let you child know when you have enjoyed a conversation with them, let them know what you liked about it.

9. Teach by example. Practice the art of conversation and let your child see the right way to hold a conversation.

Children will develop these skills as they develop themselves and in the wider world have far better relationships with friends, work colleges and family.
When a person can communicate in a productive and precise manner they can make themselves understood no matter what the circumstances or type of relationship.
